Gun Rights and Public Safety

I firmly believe in the fundamental right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms for personal protection, hunting, and sport. At the same time, I recognize the urgent need to address the epidemic of gun violence that has affected communities across our state and nation. I am committed to finding common-sense solutions that protect the rights of responsible gun owners while implementing measures to keep firearms out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves or others.

Here's what you can expect from me:

1. Defending Your Rights: I am committed to defending the rights of RESPONSIBLE gun owners who have undergone proper training and licensing. I will resist any measures that infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms. The right to self-defense is a fundamental human right, and I am dedicated to safeguarding this right while promoting RESPONSIBLE gun ownership.

2. Promoting Responsible Gun Ownership: I will support initiatives that encourage firearm safety education and training to ensure that our community is well-informed and safe. I will also promote responsible gun ownership by advocating for laws that require the safe storage of firearms, helping to prevent accidental shootings and suicides.

3. Enhancing Background Checks: I will advocate for comprehensive and enhanced background checks for all gun purchases, including private sales and gun shows, to ensure that firearms are kept out of the hands of convicted felons, domestic abusers, and individuals with severe mental health issues.

4. Closing the Gun Show Loophole: I will work to close the gun show loophole, ensuring that all gun sales, regardless of where they occur, are subject to background checks.

5. Fighting for Common-Sense Legislation: While I am a strong advocate for the Second Amendment, I am also committed to finding common ground on issues related to gun violence prevention. I will work to promote common-sense legislation that keeps firearms out of the hands of criminals and those who pose a threat to public safety while respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens.

6. Introducing Red Flag Laws: I will introduce Red Flag laws, which allow family members or law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily restrict someone in crisis from accessing guns. These laws have been shown to save lives. They respect individual rights, and they empower those close to a person in crisis to act. However, I also recognize the importance of due process and will advocate for Red Flag laws that provide procedural safeguards. I will work to raise awareness about these laws and, I will work to pass them at the state level. 

7. Fostering Community-Based Solutions: I believe in the power of community-based solutions to address gun violence. I will work to fund and support programs that work to reduce violence at the local level, engaging with community leaders, educators, and law enforcement to create safer environments for all residents.

8. Engaging in Open Dialogue: I am committed to maintaining an open and respectful dialogue with all constituents, regardless of their stance on gun rights. I believe that by working together, we can find balanced solutions that respect the Second Amendment while taking meaningful steps to reduce gun violence. 

9. Respecting Hunting and Sportsmanship: I will fight to protect the rights of hunters and sportsmen, ensuring that responsible and lawful hunting practices are preserved for future generations.
